  • Day 2: DECEMBER 30: HUSKIES & WILDLIFE

Start your morning with an authentic Finnish breakfast buffet before heading out for the day’s exciting Arctic adventures. Today we are going to Ranua Wildlife Park but on the way, approx. 30 minutes bus ride from Kemi we will make a short stop and visit a husky farm. Here you get to meet Santa’s canine helpers! The group will be split into smaller groups: while one group enjoys a short 500 meter husky safari in the in the breath-taking wilderness (two persons sharing one dog team), the others are enjoying hot juice and snacks at a traditional tepee and go into the forest to feed the forest animals with Santa´s little helpers*. Afterwards the groups swap their activities before moving on to the next destination, Ranua Wildlife Park. Even though the husky ride only last for a few minutes it will sure give you memories for a life time.

    * Please note that this is referring to wild animals so sightings during the feeding can´t be guaranteed as wild animals are very shy and tend to stay away from humans.

After we have said goodbye to the huskies you can relax during the 1.5 hour bus journey to the park as the road winds through Lapland’s peaceful, snow-covered countryside. Upon arrival at Ranua Wildlife Park, enjoy a Lappish style lunch buffet in the park’s restaurant before you are joining a guided walking tour through the park to observe Arctic wildlife such as polar bears, lynx and wolves. Afterwards, you also have a chance for some souvenir shopping at the park’s souvenir and candy shops before the return ride to the hotel.

Please note that the activities for this day might be done in different orders than stated above and will be confirmed closer to arrival.

Back at the hotel you can take some time to relax before dinner is served at your hotel.

  • Day 3: DECEMBER 31: REINDEERS, SANTA CLAUS AND NEW YEARS CELEBRATIONS

Experience the magic of the Arctic Circle during a day-long excursion to Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, which is a relaxing 1.5 hour ride from Kemi in a comfortable coach bus. The first stop is a Lappish reindeer farm. Here, you can learn about reindeer herding and Sami culture and take a 30-minute peaceful ride in a reindeer sleigh through the woods. Your guide will take the lead and you will follow in a true Sami-style convoy, but you will still earn a special “reindeer driver license” from this experience! Afterwards, enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the famous Santa Claus Village to meet Santa himself and his merry elves at his workshop before a bit of souvenir shopping. By late afternoon the coach bus returns you to Kemi.

Back at the hotel, get dressed in your favourite (and warm!) outdoor party outfit before a bus will pick you up in the evening and bring you to a wilderness location 20min away from Kemi in the middle of the forest. We will celebrate tonight’s New Year’s Eve in style. A festive dinner is served at the wooden hut before you will discover the outside area. Feed reindeers, try activities such as tin melting and fortune telling. You will also be baptized by a traditional way inside a kota tepee. A necklace amulet is given to each guest as a memory.

Before the countdown to midnight starts, you will be transferred to Victoriatorget on the border between Finland and Sweden to experience two New Year celebrations. First you can watch a firework in Finland at midnight and one hour later it is time again in Sweden at their midnight. After the celebrations, the bus will bring you back to your hotel and you are free to discover Kemi’s nightlife.

  • Day 4: JANUARY 01: DEPARTURE

After breakfast at the hotel, transportation is provided to Kemi Airport or Kemi Train Station.

    * Should you choose to fly out of Oulu Airport, note that the transfer from Kemi to Oulu is not included in the cost of the tour. See "Transfers to/from Oulu" under the items Not Included in this tour for more information.

Amazing

It was amazing. I had so much fun. The guides were amazing, easy to get on with and really helpful. I can't praise them enough. The tour was so much better than I could have expected and has given me amazing memories and experiences to take back with me. I would, and already have, recommend this tour to anyone.

We all had a fantastic time

We arrived home from Lapland last night and I just wanted to let you know that we all had a fantastic time. Lapland Safaris, who took us on the night-time snowmobile safari, dog-sledding adventure and reindeer farm, were excellent, very well organised and friendly. The hotel, Clarion Santa Claus, was very comfortable, terrific breakfast each morning and check-out wasn't until 12 noon on the day we left which was great. All your arrangements and bookings worked very smoothly. Thank you.

New Year's Adventure in Finnish Lapland, December 2013

One of the best New Year Eve celebrations ever

Everything was what we expected. The service was excellent, the hotel comfortable and plenty of food and drink. The guide gave clear information and instruction on what to do and how the tour would be conducted. Excellent service. The whole experience was very positive and enjoyable. Right from organising the itinerary with Cecilia to the activities on the tour. Our guide Sami was fun and informative and VERY professional. It was one of our best New Year Eve celebrations ever and our children gained a lot from the experience. The restaurants chosen were so picturesque and we felt like it was a true Lapland experience.

Adventure Packages
All of Nordic Visitor’s Lapland travel packages should be considered adventure travel on account of being operated in the Arctic during sometimes extreme weather conditions and with the use of live animals for many excursions. For this reason, those booking a travel package in Lapland should consider themselves at least moderately physically fit and comfortable engaging in activities that are considered adventurous or strenuous.

Some things to keep in mind:
  • There will be snow and ice on the ground, sometimes making it difficult to walk.
  • No luggage handling services will be available. You must be prepared and able to carry your own luggage in snowy conditions.
  • Accommodations will be simple in comparison to what you’d find in major urban centres.
  • WC facilities encountered during excursions may be unheated outhouses without running water.
  • During husky safaris where you share one team of huskies with another person, the person standing to drive the sled will need to kick to assist the dogs and may be required to run when sledding uphill.
  • Reindeer and huskies can run very fast. Those interested in participating in either a reindeer or husky safari should keep this in mind. In this specific package however the reindeer safari is a more relaxed slow paced tour while the husky tour is faster paced.
  • Some snowmobile safaris may require you to drive in the dark. Those interested in participating in snowmobile safaris should keep this in mind.
  • By law, those interested in driving a snowmobile must be able to present a valid driver’s license.
  • The safety of our travellers is our top priority at Nordic Visitor. We reserve the right to change or cancel departures if we feel the conditions will jeopardize the safety of our customers.

Meals
Starting with dinner on the 29th of December and ending with breakfast on the 01st of January all meals are included during the tour. The meals are a mix of traditional Finnish/Lappish food and international dishes. The dinners are either 3 course set menus or buffets. A typical 3 course dinner consists of salad or soup, main course such as meat or fish and dessert f.e. cakes, ice-cream and more.

If you have any food allergies, please let your travel consultant know as soon as possible so we can inform the local suppliers and hotels

Currency rate
All bookings are charged in Euros (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. Therefore, conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.
