  • Day 1: Arrival & Northern Lights snowmobile excursion

Arrive at Rovaniemi Airport where you will be met by a driver and transferred to your hotel in Rovaniemi. Spend some time resting up or exploring the town before your first adventure of the trip. This evening you’ll embark on a guided snowmobile excursion into the wild to look for the northern lights dancing in the sky. Before returning to the city you’ll get to enjoy a hot beverage and a snack around a campfire with the guide.

    Spend the night in Rovaniemi.

    Helpful notes:
    • Two people will share one snowmobile and take turns driving. To drive, you must have a valid driver’s license.
    • The snowmobile excursion starts around 5:30 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays. If you arrive on a different day of the week, we will move this activity to day 2 or 3 and modify your itinerary accordingly.
    • Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

  • Day 2: Dog sledding & Traditional Finnish Sauna

Today you’ll learn about a traditional mode of winter transport in Lapland by taking part in a guided dog sled excursion. Following a brief lesson at the kennel, you’ll soon be mushing with your own sled, pulled by a team of energetic huskies, through the woods and over the snowy plains. After a thrilling ride, enjoy a hot beverage with the musher back at the kennel.

Back in the city, spend the rest of the afternoon and evening as you wish. Since Finland is famous for its sauna culture, we highly recommend spending some time today relaxing in the sauna at your hotel. It’s a great way to feel refreshed for the adventures yet to come on your trip.

    Spend the night in Rovaniemi.

    Helpful notes:
    • Two people will share one sled and take turns driving.

  • Day 3: Visit to a Reindeer farm & Santa Claus Village

The day begins with a guided snowmobile excursion to a reindeer farm, which presents a unique opportunity to experience the culture of Lapland’s native Sami people. Along with learning fun facts about reindeer, you’ll enjoy a short sled ride and learn first-hand how fast these animals can run. You’ll also join your hosts in a special ceremony of crossing the Arctic Circle.

In the afternoon you’ll travel by car to the Santa Claus Village where you’ll have some time to do some souvenir shopping, send postcards from Santa’s main post office and enjoy lunch at a cosy restaurant. Of course, you will also get to meet Santa Claus himself! Afterwards you’ll be returned to Rovaniemi, where you can spend the evening at your leisure.

    Spend the night in Rovaniemi.

    Helpful notes:
    • Two people will share one snowmobile and take turns driving. To drive, you must have a valid driver’s license.
    • In case of poor trail or weather conditions in December, the transfers to/from the reindeer farm may be done by car instead for safety reasons. However, in such event, the program will still include some time driving snowmobiles.

  • Day 4: Open day & evening at the Arctic Snow Hotel

Explore Rovaniemi on your own for the first part of the day. To learn more about the local history, nature and culture, pay a visit to the Arktikum Museum and browse the interesting exhibits about Finnish Lapland and the Arctic region.

In the evening you will be taken to nearby Lehtojärvi, which is known for its excellent opportunities to view the northern lights. Here you’ll go on a guided tour of the Arctic SnowHotel, which is built entirely of snow and ice each year and includes beautifully crafted ice rooms as well as an ice restaurant and ice bar. There are also warm glass igloo accommodations on the premises. After the tour you’ll enjoy a dinner based on local specialties at the rustic Restaurant Kota, modelled after a traditional Sami structure. Around midnight you will be returned to the city.

OPTIONAL – overnight in a glass igloo or at the Arctic SnowHotel: To add even more adventure to this trip, you can upgrade your accommodation this evening to a warm glass igloo or a snow room at the Arctic SnowHotel (optional; not included). If you’re interested in sleeping under the stars (great for northern lights viewing!) or spending a night surrounded by ice art on a frozen bed lined with reindeer furs, this is your chance to do it.

    Spend the night in Rovaniemi.

Reviews

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Thorough and informative

Nordic Visitor was thorough and informative. I would highly recommend it especially to first time international travelers such as myself.

We had a great time

Coming from South Africa and experiencing the Nordic Winter was a high-light for us. Boy was it cold! But we really enjoyed it. Loved the Reindeer farm and Sami culture experience. We also enjoyed talking to the locals and getting their perspective on life in general.

Wonderful tour

First of all Thank you Cicci that was a wonderful tour embedded in our memory forever. Hotels: Both in Kemi and Rovaniemi the best part was the central location of these hotels. They were so near to the airport, train station as well the safari office. The pick up from airport to train station to hotel and vice versa dot on time, quick and of course all pleasant people. Tours and Safari - We enjoyed it to the core. The guides were excellent and helpful with info and very caring towards my kid. Meals - It was again a different and wonderful experience esp the Beetroot dish which we had on our Santa tour. Though we confirmed at last moment about are vegetarian food they made a very delicious dish. Looking forward for more trips through Nordic Visitor.

We will be back

It was a once in a lifetime experience and we loved every aspect of our trip. Our biggest highlight was the Husky sledding. Nordic Visitor organised every aspect of our trip for us and facilitated all our extras we wanted to do. It was amazing service and we would like to make sure Sofia is recognized for her hard work and that she gave us complete confidence in our trip bookings. We will be back in the future!!

Tour Information

If you would like to book this tour with an arrival date 4 weeks or less from today, please contact us for assistance.

  • All tour packages in Lapland are subject to availability, so we advise not booking flights until we have confirmed your booking. In the event that accommodations are fully booked on your preferred dates, your travel consultant will be in touch with information about the next available dates.
  • Please note that some hotels in Rovaniemi automatically add an evening Christmas Eve, Christmas or New Year’s Eve dinner at their hotel restaurants – and the extra cost for this – to their rates. Therefore, we may need to add this extra cost to bookings on the 24th, 25th or 31st of December. If this applies to your tour package, your travel consultant will get back to you with more information after the booking has been made.
  • Extra nights can be added on request.
  • The cabins at Lapland Hotel Ounasvaara Chalet are available from 5 January until 31 March.
  • In general, our vacation packages in Lapland are child-friendly, but please note that many activities (e.g., snowmobile and dog sled tours) have an age limit of 4 years old. Feel free to contact us for details about prices and information about family friendly packages.

For more information about travelling in Lapland, such as what to pack and what to expect with the weather, check out our Lapland Travel Guide.

Adventure Packages
All of Nordic Visitor’s Lapland travel packages should be considered adventure travel on account of being operated in the Arctic during sometimes extreme weather conditions and with the use of live animals for many excursions. For this reason, those booking a travel package in Lapland (except for those considered family travel packages) should consider themselves at least moderately physically fit and comfortable engaging in activities that are considered adventurous or strenuous.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Please be advised that in peak winter months, daylight is limited to a few hours — usually between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. However, the light reflecting off the snow can make the days seem brighter.
  • There will be snow and ice on the ground, sometimes making it difficult to walk.
  • No luggage handling services will be available. You must be prepared and able to carry your own luggage in snowy conditions.
  • Accommodations will be simple in comparison to what you’d find in major urban centres.
  • WC facilities encountered during excursions may be unheated outhouses without running water.
  • During husky safaris where you share one team of huskies with another person, the person standing to drive the sled will need to kick to assist the dogs and may be required to run when sledding uphill.
  • Reindeer and huskies can run moderately fast and the terrain may be uneven in some spots, so the sled rides can be bumpy at times.

The safety of our travellers is our top priority at Nordic Visitor. We reserve the right to change or cancel departures if we feel the conditions will jeopardize the safety of our customers.

Snowmobile tours

  • By law, those interested in driving a snowmobile must be at least 18 years of age and able to present a valid driver’s license.
  • Drinking alcohol is not allowed before driving a snowmobile.
  • Some snowmobile excursions may require you to drive in the dark. Those interested in participating should keep this in mind.
  • Children are seated in a sled pulled by the guides snowmobile during snowmobile excursions.

Northern Lights
The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Evening excursions will operate according to the tour schedule, even in unfavourable viewing conditions, and our guides will do their utmost to determine the best possible location for sightings.

Activities & Guides
This is a self-guided tour with scheduled English-speaking guided excursions and activities. All accommodations and included activities and services (as specified in the itinerary) will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor in close co-operation with trusted local suppliers. You will not have a dedicated guide for the duration of your time in Lapland, but can expect a different qualified guide for each planned excursion. You are responsible for making your way to the specified meeting point for the start of each excursion. The time between scheduled excursions and activities will be free-time.

After booking with Nordic Visitor
After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days by one of our travel consultants, who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all of your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday. Before you travel, Nordic Visitor will provide you with a detailed personal itinerary and vouchers for all services and activities booked for your travel package. You will also be provided with Nordic Visitor’s 24/7 helpline phone number where you can always reach a Nordic Visitor representative during your time in Lapland.
